This learning activity is intended to provide learners with the opportunity to:
1. The personal meanings of the word “Inquiry”.
2. Using various ways of knowing in the process of Inquiry.
3. The distinction between gnostic and pathic Knowing and Inquiry in Nursing.
4. Reflects on epistemology as a study of the methods and acquisition of knowledge, what constitutes knowledge, and how it is created.
5. Explores the meaning of the concepts: inquiry, critical questioning, reflection, personal meaning, ontology, ways of knowing, legitimate knowledge, multiple realities, paradigm influences, and questioning.

In Practice
1. As a group, brainstorm definitions for the following terms:
1. Inquiry
2. Critical Questioning
3. Knowledge
4. Reflection
5. Personal Meaning
6. Ontology
7. Epistemology
8. Legitimate Knowledge
9. Multiple Realities
10. Questioning.
2. With a partner, analyze this following statement (from the end of the van Manen reading). Brainstorm ways to put into words the various pathic activities and ways of knowing demonstrated by nurses. Share these with the class.
“If we want to be sensitive to the pathic nature of nursing and medical practice then we need to pursue forms of research that uses pathic language. Pathic questions cannot be answered by texts that primarily communicate cognitive meaning. And gnostic insights cannot produce pathic experience. To construct texts that can address and reflect on the experience of illness we need to get beyond the objectifying effects of naming the things of our world with labels that distance us from them. We need to write (and read) for tone and pathic understanding, and to this effect our words must be slow, new, single, and tentative” .
3. Create a concept map, using the term “Nursing Inquiry” as the central foundational concept.
(Individually or in small groups). Share your work with the class.
4. With a partner, create a one paragraph scenario about a client situation. Then list the ways that you would use Inquiry to support, care, and help to heal the people in the vignette. Share this with the class.
5. Contrast the ways of knowing described by both van Manen and Walker. Can these be complementary?
In Reflection
1. As you go about your daily activities, notice how you “know” things, how you “inquire”, and how you pull together different ways of knowing.
