Processes of Inquiry:
Technological Modes of Inquiry
|
Overview
“"Questions may be the most powerful technology we have ever created.
Questions and questioning allow us to make sense of a confusing world.
They are the tools that lead to insight and understanding."
- - Jamie McKenzie (1999).
Because of the rapid increase in world knowledge and changes in communication patterns, the need for education to reflect the demands of a new literacy are critical. We are in a time of transition. Old skills such as cursive writing will be less critical for a literate person. The ability to keyboard and to interpret visual media will become more critical. Educators need to balance the emphasis on educational experiences. They must keep in mind that the knowledge and skills that individuals will need as literate persons in the 21st century may not have been invented yet. Therefore, inquiry, information creation, and self directed learning are critically important tools for instruction. These inquiry based learning instructional strategies facilitate the development of literate individuals for the 21st century by fostering life long learning skills in problem solving, critical thinking, inquiry, self directed learning, and knowledge creation.

This learning activity is intended to provide learners with the opportunity to:
1. Recognize how technology can be used for inquiry-based, interactive and constructivist
activities in education and in nursing.
2. Recognize computer literacy requirements for inquiry application.
3. Predict how inquiry can be facilitated using technology.
4. Assess their own skills and capabilities to use technology in inquiry and learning.
In Preparation
1. READ:McKenzie, J. (1999). Questions and Questioning: The Most Powerful Technologies of All. From Now On: The Educational Technology Journal, 9 (3), November.
2. . READ: White, M. (2000). Questioning behavior on a consumer health electronic list. Library Quarterly, 70(5), 302 – 334.
3. Informally ASSESS your own computer literacy level. Are you at ease when using computers and other technologies for learning? For inquiry? Explore my site, Nursing Informatics Competencies Self-Assessment.
In Practice
1. Participate in class discussion on the following question:
“Is it possible that the information technology revolution actually provides a distinctive, never before available, and uniquely appropriate set of tools to enhance education and nursing in an inquiry based, interactive, constructivist mode? “
Rationalize your thoughts.
2. White described how questioning and inquiry can be used to study online discussions related to health, held on the Internet. How can her findings provide direction for nursing inquiry?
3. In small groups, explore the concerns raised by McKenzie about expertise and questioning what one finds on the Internet. He points out: “Powerful questioning leads to Information Power - the ability to fashion solutions, decisions and plans that are original, cogent and effective.”
Brainstorm ways that nursing inquiry can occur using the Internet, particularly the World Wide Web.
4. Again in small groups, brainstorm an ideal environment for nurses to use technology for
inquiry activities in nursing education, practice and research. Make a concept map or sketch
to illustrate your ideas. Share with the class.
In Reflection
1. How can you enhance your ability to use technology for nursing inquiry in a relaxed and accessible way?

ASSIGNMENTS
You are encouraged to begin to think about the type of Nursing Inquiry focus you wish to address as the context for your major assignments in this course. We will build up to this practical application of the content early in the course. Try to make it a meaningful focus that you can actually use in your current or future practice.
