Nursing is Inquiry in Practice:

World Views In Inquiry

Overview

"The word science comes from a word meaning "knowledge," and the word philosophy comes from one meaning "wisdom." All research is based on philosophical beliefs about the world, also called a worldview or paradigm. Paradigm is from a Greek word meaning "pattern". Thomas Kuhn first applied this word to science to describe the way people in society think about the world."

- Lo-Biondo-Wood & Haber, (2002), p. 127.

Paradigms or worldviews help us to organize information and data in order to undergo the process of inquiry. Often, nursing education and practice makes an examination of one's worldview both imperative and automatic. In order to provide nursing care in a meaningful, phenomenological way, nursing students and practitioners need to analyze and articulate particular worldviews of caring, being, and action in the world of nursing. The core paradigms of nursing have undergone radical transitions over the past decades. It is both grounding and enlightening for nurses to witness these various worldviews and identify the ones that empower them to practice in an effective and healing way.

Ends In View

This learning activity is intended to provide learners with the opportunity to:

1. Explore the concept of "Worldview” as it relates to Nursing and Nursing Inquiry

2. Understand and give examples of the diversity of worldviews possible.

3. Explore the relevance of worldviews for Nursing Education, Research and Practice.

In Preparation

1. Consider what YOUR worldview is. Write a paragraph or two to summarize it.

2. Pay attention to people you interact with, or watch on television or as you are out and about. How would you describe their worldview?

3.Read: Van Sell, S. L. (2002). Nursing: Receding and evolving paradigms (editorial). ICUs and Nursing Web Journal, 10, April - June.

4.Read: Leffel, Jim. (1994). Understanding Basic Beliefs. Understanding World Views.

5. Visit: A variety of web cams listed on the Earth Cam site:

Contrast the worldview afforded at the following websites and bring your insights to class for discussion. Notice the nuances of these various close shots of the world, and distinguish the world views conveyed.

How are they similar? How are they different?

In Practice

1. Participate in class discussion related to worldviews and how they influence Nursing and Nursing Inquiry.

2. Consider the article by Van Sell. How have the evolving paradigms or worldviews described influenced Nursing Inquiry, Research, and Practice?

3. Discuss the three worldviews written about by Leffel. Share your feelings about how they relate to your own world views, and the common world view themes of contemporary times.

4. With a partner or small group, create a concept map linking the various parts of one's world view, including the influence on Nursing Inquiry, Research and Practice. Discuss how people who live in the various places viewed on your web cam online tour might have different worldviews from others. How does environment impact on worldview?

5. What shapes your worldview? Your thoughts, your feelings, your physical sensations and observation? Your culture? Your education? Your experiences? Explain.

In Reflection

1. Continue to observe your own worldview in action. Think about how it has changed since you first began the Collaborative Nursing Program. How has it changed since beginning the sixth semester of the program?

RESOURCES FOR ASSIGNMENTS

You are encouraged to begin to think about the type of Nursing Inquiry focus you wish to address as the context for your major assignments in this course. We will build up to this practical application of the content early in the course. Try to make it a meaningful focus that you can actually use in your current or future practice.
