Lifestyle changes: This includes controlling blood pressure,
diabetes, high fatty and cholesterol diets. Quitting smoking (if you
smoke), increasing physical activity such as exercise, choosing
healthy diets, limiting alcohol use and reducing your stress level
are very important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, thus reducing
your risk for atherosclerosis. Research has shown that improvements
in these areas could reduce ones chances of developing coronary
heart diseases like atherosclerosis.
Medication: Depending on the stage of atherosclerotic build
up in the arteries different medications that reduce cholesterol and
fats may be prescribed by your doctor. Also medications that prevent
clotting may also be prescribed. These medications are called
antiplatelets or anticoagulants.
