Complications

There are various complications that can arise from acquiring childhood obesity

Physical Complications

  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Studies have indicated that "type 2 diabetes mellitus among obese children has increased 10-fold in the past 20 years"(Cochran, Walters & Losek, 2006).
  • Asthma
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperlipidemia
  • Heart disease
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Sleep apnea
  • Osteoarthritis and orthopedic poblems such as chronic ankle sprains
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disorder (Berg, 2005)

    Psychological Complications

  • Poor self-esteem
  • Eating disorders (Anorexia, Bulimia)
  • Body image disorder
  • Social isolation
