What Created the Stigma?
- Due to the lack of research, the incidence of
domestic violence against men appears to be low.
- It has taken years of advocacy and support to
encourage women to report domestic violence. Virtually nothing has been
done to encourage men to report the same type of violence against
them.
- The idea that men could be victims of domestic
abuse is unthinkable to most people, therefore, many men will not even
attempt to report the situation.
- Some men believe its a private matter between he and his partner, and
is no one else's business.
- Some men feel as if their "manhood" is lessened by admitting to
being abused.
- Some men feel they did something to deserve the abuse, therefore,
they do not report it.
- Due to societal gender stereotypes, even when men
do report domestic abuse and violence, most people are so astonished,
men usually end up feeling like nobody would believe them.
