How long will the effects last?

The risk of problems for the baby will exist as long as the baby's growth problems continue, or until baby is delivered.

Some of the problems for the baby include:

  • not enough oxygen in the blood
  • low blood sugar
  • low calcium in the blood
  • pneumonia from getting meconium (baby potty) in the lungs before delivery
  • high levels of bilirubin (something that makes your babies skin or eyes yellow)
  • delivery complications
  • fetal distress (baby is not happy) during labor.

  • How can I take care of myself?

The best way to take care of yourself and your baby is to stay calm and follow the advice of your doctor and nurses. Your baby may be perfectly normal. Be sure to discuss any concerns you have with your doctor, so you can be happy throughout your pregnancy. It is okay to ask questions.
Being prepared for your labor and delivery helps you to know what is happening to you at the time. You can do this by going to prenatal classes. The Surrey Public Health Office offers Punjabi Prenatal Classes.

Baby's Best Chance Book is another way to prepare for your pregnancy. Your doctor or the Surrey Memorial Hospital Family Birthing Unit can give you a coupon for the book, when you pre-register. You can pick up the book at the Public Heath Unit.

What can be done to help prevent IUGR?

Growth restriction may be due to factors you can not totally control. However, things such as nutrition, rest and exercise can be controlled. You can try and eat nutritionally balanced meals, decrease stress, get regular exercise, rest and sleep to prevent serious complications.
