How do I know if I'm in "true" labour?

Pre - labour
True labour
  • contractions are irregular in intervals and length
  • contractions are more regular and the length
    usually increases (lasting 30-60 sec)
  • the strength of the contractions remains the
    same or may lessen
  • the contractions gradually become more
    painful
  • contractions are often felt in the lower abdomen
  • contractions may be felt in the abdomen,
    lower back or thighs
  • contractions may be most uncomfortable when you
    are moving and decrease during rest
  • contractions continue even at rest
  • there is usually no 'show' (blood tinged
    mucousy discharge)
  • there may be 'show'
  • My labour is starting...what now?

    • Stay at home until labour is active
    • active labour is 3-4 contractions in 10 minutes,lasting 45-60 seconds and uncomfortable
    • the comfort of your home is the best place for you in early labour, where your family can
      support you and keep you relaxed
    • eat light,easily digested snacks and continue to drink plenty of fluids
    • balance walking/changing positions with rest
