  • I can't get HIV because I am not an IV drug user and I am Heterosexual
    -more and more heterosexual people are contracting HIV. This can be seen in people who ingage in sex with mulitple partners with high risk behaviors

  • There is a cure for HIV and AIDS
    -There is NO cure, however treatments are better than ever and can extensively prolong life


  • Having sex with a virgin will cure HIV -This is a common myth world wide. By engaging in activities like this, you will not cure yourself of HIV but potentially spead it to your sexual partner

  • Mosquitoes Transmit HIV
    -No evidence has prooven this. Mosquitoes do not inject blood from a previous victim into your body. They do however, transfere saliva and that is when you could possibley transmit malaria or yellow fever etc.

  • I can't get HIV from Oral Sex
    -Although oral sex is a lower risk activity compared to vaginal or anal sex, when semen comes in contact with the membranes in your mouth HIV can be spread.
  • Women with HIV cannot have children
    -Women with HIV are furtile (except maybe in later stages). The risk for transmitting HIV to your child is between 15-30%, however, medication therapy can reduce this number to 2-3%

  • I can get HIV from sharing dishes or food, or just being close to someone
    -HIV does not transmit through casual contact (hugging, holding hands). Sharing silverwear or dishwear will not increase your chances of contracting HIV

  • I can get HIV through contact with bodily fluids other than vaginal or semin
    -NO. Comming in contact with: saliva, tears or sweat will NOT transmit HIV.

  • Pets can contract and transfer HIV
    -FALSE: with the exception of chimpanezes, humans are the only animals that can contract HIV
