At Douglas Park Elementary School in downtown Langley, a school program known as Explorations has provided the opportunity for its students (many of whom are underprivileged) to take part in extracurricular activities without personal cost. These activities for the majority include sports such as hockey, martial arts, gymnastics, and dance, in addition to art and woodworking classes. Another program that is offered in association with the Explorations program is the PuCKS program (Promoting Community through Kids and Sport). The initiative behind this program is to offer children under “financial constrain” with the opportunity to play hockey (PuCKS Program, 2006). Through discussion with a nursing instructor at Kwantlen University College who developed this program, it was discovered that the main idea behind PuCKS is prevention; that is not only to ensure realization of the benefits it produces in the near future but the distant future as well. Through providing underprivileged children with the opportunity to participate in physical activity and sport, there is hope that the benefits will prevent them from enduring an underprivileged future that could potentially result in homelessness, substance abuse, criminal activity and other unfortunate behaviours.
