This site will talk about the history, the barriers that deter men from choosing nursing, and the strategies we could employ to counter those barriers. Fast Facts


  • The Canadian male population is 49% (CNA, 2004).

  • Men in nursing only represent 5% of the 246,575 nurses in Canada (CNA, 2004).

  • In British Columbia, there are 28,289 registered nurses but only 4.8% are male (CRNBC, 2006).

  • In comparison, Netherlands has a male nurse population of 23%, and Germany and the Philippines also have substantial male nurse populations (Whittock and Leonard, 2003).
