Youth developmental stage begins with at time of puberty and ends with the achievement of a level of independence (Edelman and Mandle, 2002). In addition, it is a period that is identified with dramatic changes in the body both physical and emotional, along with developments in a person's psychology and academic career (2002). There is also an opportunity for learning by experience and experimentation. A young adult is a unique and dynamic individual. They can experiment with many illegal drugs that may unhealthy effects.
Substance use refers to “any consumption of psychoactive drugs, which may or may not involve dependence” (Kneisl, Holly, & Eileen, 2004, p.300). Psychoactive drugs are alcohol, tobacco, illicit and licit drugs. Examples of illicit drugs are cannabis marijuana and hashish), phencyclidines (PCP, Ketamine), stimulants (amphetamines, cocaine, crack) and opiates. Conversely, licit drugs are used for medicinal purposes that are legally available by prescription. Furthermore, substance abuse refers to drugs use that “leads to adverse physical or psychological consequences” this can or may not involve dependence (p.300).
