DEFINITION:
Type II Diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.
It occurs when ones body does not make enough insulin,
or does not properly use the insulin your body makes.

Insulin, which is produced by your pancreas,
enables sugar to enter your body's cells to be used for energy.


RISK FACTORS FOR TYPE II DIABETES:

  • Overweight = having too much body fat is a major risk
    factor for Type II Diabetes.

  • Smoking = smoking cigarettes makes it harder to control
    your blood sugar.

  • Inactivity = leads to excess body fat, high blood sugar
    & high blood pressure.

  • High Blood Pressure / High Cholesterol

  • Family History = you are at increased risk if a close relative has
    been diagnosed with diabetes.

  • Gestational Diabetes = women who have diabetes during
    pregnancy are at an increased risk of developing Diabetes
    Type II later on in life.

  • Age = Type II Diabetes is more common in people age 40
    and older.

  • Ethnic Group = certain ethnic groups, such as African
    Americans, Latinos, Hispanics, Native Americans, and
    Pacific Islanders are more likely to develop diabetes.
