The key to managing Type II Diabetes is through lifestyle changes. The goal is to keep your blood sugar level between the normal range. This control can be obtained in a number of ways.
* Healthy Eating
nutrition experts say there is no one diet for Diabetes, but people with diabetes should follow the Canadian Food Guide. Try eating more starches, and eating 5 fruits and 5 vegetables every day. Eat sugar and sweets in moderation.
* Increase Activity
living an active life can help lower your blood sugar level, and keep it low even days after you are active. The American Diabetes Associaion (2007) recommends 30 minutes of physical activity per day to help lower blood sugar levels and to improve your body's response to insulin. Try walking instead of driving, and take the stairs instead of the elevator.
* Diabetes Medications
your doctor may prescribe medication(s), along with your diet and exercise plan, to help you control your blood sugar. Over time, as your body changes, your doctor may make changes to help control your blood sugar levels. There are oral pills, such as Metformin or Diabeta, which work in different ways to lower your blood sugar. Your doctor may also prescribe insulin to lower your blood sugar, which you will need to inject into fatty body tissue on your abdomen, buttox or arms. Speak to your doctor and pharmacist for specific drug information, and techniques for self administration.
