WHAT IS IT?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an AUTOIMMUNE disease. This means that the body's immune system attacks it's own tissue, in this case, the cartilage and joint linings of the body. RA can occur at any age but is most common between the ages of 25-55 and affects more women than men.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not known, but there is evidence that links there is a genetic connection. People with RA are more likely to have other family members with it as well.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

The main symptom of Rheumatoid Arthritis is INFLAMMATION. Inflammation occurs at the joints that are affected by a particular individual and causes swelling, pain, redness and heat around the joint. Also, weakness, fatigue, fever or weight loss may be seen as well.

WHAT ARE SOME WARNING SIGNS?

Morning stiffness that lasts longer than 30 minutes, pain in three or more joints at the same time, pain in a joint all night long can all be signs of rheumatoid arthritis. Pain in the same joints on both sides of your body. When this occurs it is important to see your doctor to determine if RA is indicated.
