Bulimia

What is Bulimia?

Bulimia is a psychological eating disorder characterized by episodes of binge-eating followed by inappropriate methods of weight control (purging). Binge eating can be defined as eating large quantities of food at once, then throwing up or using laxatives to remove food from the body. The removal of food from the body is termed purging(mamashealth, 2008). After a binge, some individuals may not eat for a while (fasting) or over-exercise to keep from gaining weight (eatingdisorders, 2008). Feelings of guilt and anxiety are often experienced after bingeing. People may also eat in private areas, where they can be alone and able to hide what they are eating. Bulimia often accompanies feelings of shame and guilt. It can also leave a person feeling like they have no control over their eating (eatingdisorder, 2008).
