The period of diagnosis of PD is a time of change and adaptation. This will be a difficult time in which the person diagnosed with PD and their family must recognize that change is occurring and certain aspects of life will require adaptation.
Finding Support
It is important that both the person with PD and their family feel supported through this process. Each person may feel supported in different ways. As PD progresses different levels of support may be needed. Support can be sought by:
• Contacting Parkinson Society Canada and Parkinson Society British Columbia
• Speaking with your health care provider and specialists
• Attending support groups
• Talking with family and friends
• Seeking information about PD from reputable sources
Role Changes
PD can cause the need for role changes for the person with PD and their family. As PD progresses the person may no longer be able to work. This can impact their family financially. Also, as they lose their independence they may no longer be able to complete certain tasks around the house. The person with PD will eventually require assistance with daily living activities. These changes can be extremely difficult for the person with PD and their family. It is important to ensure that supports are in place when these role changes do occur.
For those with PD a major loss of feeling independent comes when they are no longer able to drive. The Parkinson Society British Columbia provides a self-assessment tool to discuss driving and living with PD.
