The discussion forums are an important part of course participation. The forums are housed on the secure side
of the course website. Each week you will have one or more topics assigned for comment and participation. I will be
looking for regular participation. First, comment on the assigned topics. Second, respond to comments made by
your classmates. You will need to register and establish your profile on the secure site before proceeding to the forum.
WEEK 1: Learning Activity 1: Discussions 1a & 1b - Transitions
1a. Participate in the forum discussion related to the multitude of transitions evident in the Canadian Health care system, with emphasis on the BC system. Think of a major transition that you have experienced repercussions from first hand during your nursing education. Dialogue about the effect this transition had on your ability to provide high quality care, the effects on clients involved, and on the health care team members involved. Share your insights with the class.
1b: Apply principles of critical inquiry to brainstorm ways to help clients navigate the transitions occurring in the current health care system. Refer to the two readings provided, and consider what direction these documents give Canadian nurses in dealing with Health care transitions. Post your work on the discussion forum for this week.
WEEK 2: Learning Activity 4: Discussion 2 - Whistleblowing
In the discussion forum, participate in the dialogue on the issue of “whistle-blowing” within the nursing profession, and how it relates to acute care as well as community nursing. Include in your discussion, views on the potential ethical issues that can arise in community nursing, that arise from social theory trends and changes.
WEEK 2: Learning Activity 5: Discussion 3 - Primary Health Care
Participate in a discussion about the principles and trends in primary care in BC and Canada, and what this means for nurses in the community and other health care settings.
WEEK 3: Learning Activity 7: Discussion 4 - Determinants
What is the significance of assessing health determinants that are not routinely viewed as “health” topics, e.g. Education, income? How does this change the focus of nursing? Share your views in the designated Discussion Forum.

WEEK 4: Learning Activity 10: Discussion 6 - Health Information System
Participate in the Forum Discussion related to the emerging Canadian health information system and its’ implications for Nurses and Nursing Informatics.
WEEK 4: Learning Activity 10: Discussion 7 - Ethics & Confidentiality
Discuss the ethical and confidentiality issues related to an electronic health information system. What is your role as a nurse related to these issues? Include your thoughts on how this envisioned health information system promote evidenced based practice in Canadian health care,
WEEK 5: Learning Activity 13: Discussion 8 - Self Assessment
Write out a plan that details where you see yourself in five years, career wise. How ready are you right now for these planned roles? What do you still need to develop? How can you do this? Write down your thoughts and budding plan on the worksheet provided. Share these in the DISCUSSION FORUM.
